Choosing a Home Security Camera

What first time home buyers sometimes forget or neglect, it is so important that you have some sort of a home security system. A key part of most systems is a camera. There are a number of things that you are going to want to keep in mind when you are choosing a home security camera. This will help to make sure that you choose the best camera for your needs.

The first thing that you are going to want to consider when choosing a home security camera is whether you really need one. In a lot of cases a camera is not the best option when it comes to security systems. In most cases it is better to prevent crime rather than to try to catch the person who committed it. A sensor that is attached to an alarm is usually a more effective way of deterring crime than putting in a camera to catch the criminals. Ideally you would have a security system that includes both sensors and cameras but that can get pretty expensive. If you have to choose between the two it is usually best to go with the sensors rather than the camera.

The next thing that you are going to have to consider is whether you want a wireless camera or one that it wired in place. There are advantages and disadvantages to both so the best option for you will depend on your needs. The advantage of a wireless camera is that it can be installed easily and moved around as needed. The disadvantages are that it requires batteries that will need to be constantly changed. The opposite will apply when it comes to a wired camera, it will cost more to install and it can’t be moved around but once it is in place it doesn’t require any maintenance. In general if you are installing a camera in an area where you know it will never need to be moved you are better off with a wired camera, otherwise a wireless one is probably better.

Another factor that you are going to have to consider when choosing a home security camera is whether or not you want people to be able to see it. There are two schools of thought here, one is that by making the camera visible it will deter crime, the other is that by hiding the camera it will increase the chances of catching the criminals. There is merit to most arguments but in general deterrence is more effective. That being said if you are going to install a security system to deter criminals you are better of going with sensors anyway. The decision you make on whether or not to hide the camera will affect the one that you choose. Obviously some cameras are much easier to hide than others. If you decide that you want to hide the camera you will want to choose one that was designed to be hidden.
